Purpose: To evaluate the results of a minimum five-year follow-up in patients who underwent a total hip arthroplasty (THA) with a cementless BicontactⓇ stem (Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany).
Materials and Method: Thirty cases that had undergone a THA with a cementless BicontactⓇ stem were analyzed. The patients were followed-up for a minimum of five years, and the clinical and radiological analyses of the subjects were evaluated.
Results: The average Harris Hip Score improved from 44.8 preoperatively to 90.2 at the final follow-up. There was one case with mild thigh pain. In the radiological analyses, the rate of the radiolucency line was under 4.0% in regions 2 and 6, and under 14% in regions 3, 4 and 5, but no radiolucency line was observed in regions 1 and 7. The endosteal new bone formation was over 80% in regions 1, 2, 6 and 7, and 30~60% in regions 3, 4 and 5. The rates of cortical hypertrophy were 10~25% in regions 2, 3, 5 and 6. Calcar atrophy was observed in five cases(16.6%), but no pedestal formation was observed. There was no evidence of stem subsidence or osteolysis, and no acetabular cup loosening and migration were noted.
Conclusion: The clinical and radiological results of the Bicontact stem during THA were excellent after a minimum five years of follow-up. However, further long-term follow-up is necessary for a complete evaluation
